“You can never get enough of what you don’t need to make you
happy.” -Eric Hoffer
King Solomon was the wealthiest man in history. He denied himself “nothing his eyes desired”
(Eccles. 2:10)—experiencing designer homes, exquisite foods, exotic concubines,
fine wines—and yet at the end of his life he said these things were “meaningless!”
(Eccles. 12:8). Likewise, we always want
more. More money, more possessions, more
influence, or whatever it is that we don’t think that we have enough of. If what we have right now isn’t making us
happy, then what makes us think more of it will make us happy? More of what’s meaningless still amounts to meaninglessness.
Today let’s find satisfaction in things we already possess. Before we look for more of something, let’s
make sure that it is something we know will bring us happiness.
…for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have
(Philippians 4:11, NLT).
