“If you start to think of your
physical and moral condition, you usually find that you are sick.” –Johann
Wolfgang von Goethe
This time of year everyone seems
to be coming down with something: runny noses, fevers, sore throats, achy
muscles, weak stomachs, headaches, and coughs. Many look to modern medicine to relieve pain, but the best remedy
is old-fashioned rest. Likewise
sin may have run you into the ground, but Jesus has come for those who are sick
with sin (Mark 2:17). Like a doctor, Jesus didn’t
come for healthy people, because at one point or another everyone has been sick. Similarly Jesus didn’t come for
righteous people, because at some point we have all sinned and fallen short of
God’s glory. Jesus is calling you as you are, sick
and sinful, so that He can give you rest in His righteousness.
Then
Jesus said, "Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens,
and I will give you rest (Matthew 11:28, NLT).
