"He that can take rest is greater than he that can take
cities." -Benjamin Franklin
Jesus and his disciples’ travels
throughout the Middle East had them needing rest. As they attempted to find a remote place, a huge crowd
recognized them and Jesus had compassion on them, so He taught them and
performed a miracle to feed them.
Afterward, Jesus went up the mountainside alone to pray. It is obvious that while Jesus loved
helping others, He also felt a need to help himself. Had He not done so, He may not have been as affective in
carrying out His mission.
Likewise, there comes a time when the best option (for ourselves and
others) is pressing pause.
We need rest—whether be time in prayer, reading good books, or catching
up on sleep—so that we're more affective in carrying out our missions.
Jesus said,
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest
(Matthew 11:28, NIV).
