“As long as you keep a person
down, some part of you has to be down there to hold him down, so it means you
cannot soar as you otherwise might.”
-Marian Anderson
King Saul could see that God’s
favor was with his employee David.
In those days, one became famous by becoming a military success. It was obvious that David had become a
national sensation when people sang, “Saul has slain thousands, and David tens
of thousands.” For the rest of
Saul’s life he did everything he could to hold
David down: withholding what he owed him, manipulating and slandering him,
even trying to kill him. Saul
became a shell of the man he’d once been.
Do some honest soul-searching to ask yourselves this question. Does
someone else have to lose in order for me to win? We scheme covertly or overtly
to ensure some rival doesn’t get what they want (the influence, affection or
position). In effect, we become
meaner and smaller than our best selves.
Most of the time, others see our meanness for what it is, and we lose out
on opportunities we may have had.
Today decide to have this mindset: when I help someone else rise then I will also rise.”
Let
each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of
others (Philippians 2:4, ESV).
