“You may delay, but time
will not.” – Benjamin Franklin
Jonah knew exactly what God had asked him to do: he was to
go to Nineveh to call the people out for their sin. Afraid by how the people might respond, Jonah opted to run
from God by taking a boat to Tarshish.
It was only after a great storm and Jonah ending up in the stomach of a
whale that he decided God’s way really is better than his own. God gave Jonah a
second chance, and this time Jonah did what’s right, but not before he took a
very unpleasant detour. Jonah’s
narrative is probably similar to many of our own: we often know what God has
asked us to do, but for whatever reason, we delay in doing it. Delayed obedience is still disobedience. We will spare
ourselves pain and heartache if we just do it God’s way sooner rather than
later.
If
you make a vow to the LORD your God, you shall not delay fulfilling it
(Deuteronomy 23:21, ESV).
