“Any concept of one person being
superior to another can lead to racism.” -Walter Lang
Many Christian Jews during
Biblical time viewed themselves as racially superior to Gentiles (consisting of
largely Greeks). A small but nonetheless important facet of this belief was
that their foods were right, and the Gentiles’ foods were wrong. To reconcile the races, God decreed
that Christian Jews would eat with Gentiles. Yet, sometimes Peter (a Jew) would eat with the Gentiles,
but other times when Jews were present he’d refrain due to political
pressure. To this day the idea of
racial superiority hasn’t gone away and I assure you God cringes at any hint of
prejudice, intolerance or racism. If
you see this go on then do what Paul did; Galatians chapter 2 says that Paul
corrected Peter publicly. Paul
understood that Peter could not behave this way and represent Christ. If you’ve wrestled with racial
superiority then I encourage you to repent and ask God to help you change. If you know of people who are this way
then speak up and tell them racial superiority isn’t OK.
For there is no
distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing
his riches on all who call on him (Romans 10:12, ESV).
