“Don’t shine so others can see you. Shine so that, through you, others can
see him.” -C.S. Lewis
John the Baptist grew a large following of disciples that
were very loyal to him. When Jesus
arrived on the scene, however, instantaneously he drew attention away from John
and onto himself. Never for one
second was John envious of Jesus’ fame.
Rather he had always known that his job was to prepare the way for
Jesus, and he said that he wasn’t even worthy to untie the sandals from Jesus’
feet. As John famously touted, “He
must become, and I must become less.” Anything that doesn’t turn into praise turns into pride so
make it your life’s mission to bring fame to Jesus’ name. What’s perhaps more interesting is the
way Jesus describes John the Baptist, saying there is nobody on earth greater
than him! The lesson here is
simple: When you honor God he will always honor you.
He
must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less
(John 3:30, NLT).
