“Your potential in life is equal to the pain you're willing
to endure.” - Craig Groeschel
“Thick skin, amen.” This was one of the most profound statements I’d ever heard. If you’ve ever shaken my hand then
you’ll notice that I have calluses.
However, what you won’t notice about that handshake is that the calluses
represent the time, sweat, and pain that I’ve earned through weightlifting for
the last decade. My hands may
never be soft again, but that’s OK because I’ve pushed some serious weight
around and I’ve gotten a heck of a lot stronger. Most will never suffer to the degree Christ did—we won’t be
beaten, imprisoned, spat on, or crucified. Yet you have probably
experienced people betray you, slander you, or lie to you. These can even
be people in the church. Realize
that your pain in not in vain, you are growing thick skin. You are becoming stronger than ever
before. In life you have to keep a
tender heart for helping people, for giving and receiving love, yet embrace
your thick skin for when people fail you, because they certainly will. Ask
God to help you grow thick skin so that He can begin to use you and bless you
all the more. Thick skin, amen.
More than that,
we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and
endurance produces character, and character produces hope, (Romans 5:3, ESV).
