“You don't develop courage by being
happy in your relationships everyday. You develop it by surviving difficult
times and challenging adversity.” -Epicurus
David understood what it was like
to work with difficult people.
Whatever King Saul asked David to do, he’d do it successfully (1 Sam.
18:5). As a war commander, David
became widely famous with soldiers and people alike. Saul grew jealous of David, and took away David’s troops so
that he would die in battle. David
continued to succeed because God was with him (1 Sam. 18:14). Saul lied,
manipulated, and connived. Saul
even tried killing David himself on multiple occasions. David stayed obedient both to God and
his authority. When working
conditions finally became unbearable and David could no longer work under Saul, he refused to kill Saul to pay back evil for evil.
Instead David treated Saul with honour. Eventually God promoted David to be king. Likewise, often times we have to work with difficult people, but realize God is testing whether or not
you’ll continue to do what’s right, so that like David, He can promote
you. Be honest, work hard, and
honour.
Work
willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather
than for people (Colossians 3:23, NLT).
