“Whatever the devil can get you to
laugh at, you’ll never take seriously again.” -Adrian Rodgers
As the expression
goes, “garbage in, garbage out.”
The question becomes, however, why one ingests garbage. Most wouldn’t knowingly choose to eat
garbage, rather they very likely do not even know it’s garbage. The devil is too clever to feed you
garbage that looks, tastes, or smells like garbage; he sugarcoats garbage so
that you crave it. Many people like
indulging in sweet wine at first, but a hangover looms the next morning. Perhaps it’s a dirty joke that you know
you shouldn’t laugh at, or an explicit scene in a movie that you know you shouldn’t
continue watching. It’s little
compromises that corrupt good character and before long you have strayed from
God’s calling on your life. Here’s
a simple litmus test: if what you ingest isn’t good for you then it probably does
not glorify God either.
Bread
gained by deceit is sweet to a man, but afterward his mouth will be full of
gravel (Proverbs 20:17, ESV).
