Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and renew a right, persevering, and steadfast spirit within me. Cast me not
away from Your presence and take not Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me
the joy of Your salvation and uphold me with a willing spirit. -King David (Psalm 51:10-12)
Sometimes we do every righteous thing
in our power to gain forgiveness from God: We’ve repented, we serve at church,
and we pray three times a day—knowing we can’t earn grace. Maybe you feel like
you’ve done all you can to adequately honor the Lord, but you’re just not
spiritually at the place “you once were.” You want a clean heart again and
perhaps you’re waiting for a sign, or affirmation in His voice. Know
that God will not only forgive you, but trust that He also has the power to
help you forgive yourself. Do not fret, because God has commanded,
that the righteous rejoice.
Be glad in the Lord and rejoice, you
righteous; shout for joy, all you upright in heart! -Psalm 32:11
