“Gossip is the Devil's
radio.” -George Harrison
The adulterous woman lied on the ground as everyone around
her picked up stones to cast at her.
Jesus defended the woman, “Let him who is without sin cast the first
stone.” The stone-casting mob put
down their stones, realizing that they were being more generous with their own
sin than they were with this woman’s.
We probably don’t throw actual stones, but sometimes we gossip, which
stings others almost as much.
Maybe our gossip seems like harmless fun, or we are offended by
something someone has said or done; but we sure hate it when others talk about
us behind our backs. We ask
ourselves, “How could others be so inconsiderate? So cruel?” It certainly doesn’t feel good. Let’s make up our minds to
be as generous with others’ quirks and mistakes as we are with our own.
You shall not go around as a slanderer among your people (Leviticus 19:16, ESV).
