“Trust, but verify.” -Ronald Reagan
King Hezekiah of Judah had been
sick, so Prince Merodach of Babylon sent envoys to see if his
health had improved (Isaiah 39).
Delighted, Hezekiah showed Babylon the treasure house, the silver, the
gold, the spices, the precious oil, his whole armory, all that was found in his
storehouses. The prophet, Isaiah, came to King Hezikiah and said that what he’d
done was foolish. For one day,
Babylon would return to destroy Judah and take its people captive. (Sure enough, they did.) Matthew 7:6 tells us, “Don’t
throw your pearls before pigs.” In
other words, even if people seem interested in you, this does not mean that
they serve your best interest: so refrain from sharing the intimate parts of
your life with people you aren’t sure you can trust. Use godly discernment.
Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment
(John 7:26, ESV).
