“Words which do not give the light of
Christ increase the darkness.”
-Mother Teresa
At the age of five I lived in
Norway and I’d always go to my friend Steinar’s house to play video games. Steiner was also five but much
scrawnier, he wore glasses with extra thick lenses, and had highlighter blond
hair. Anytime he’d lose in the
video game he’d scream, “F%$# you video game!” I don’t think either one of us really understood that the F-word
was a bad word, at least I sure didn’t.
One day I went out on a boat to fish with my dad (who was a minister)
and some of his friends. We had
the fish hooked on the line when abruptly it got away. Naturally I yelled, “F#@$ you
fish!!!!” My dad just about had a
heart attack on that boat and I learned a valuable life lesson. Words are contagious because eventually
we become likened to the people we consistently spend time with. If you are around people that
speak positive words—filled hope, faith, love, and encouragement—then guess
what you’ll have to say? Otherwise
you’ll probably end up sounding a lot like I did.
Let no corrupting talk
come out of your mouths, only such as is good for building up… (Ephesians
4:29, ESV).
