“We all want progress, but if you're on the wrong road,
progress means doing an about-turn and walking back to the right road; in that
case, the man who turns back soonest is the most progressive.” -C. S. Lewis
If you’re following Christ to draw closer to Him,
an idol is whatever you can follow instead. Perhaps we may not admit it, or even see it at first, but
gradually something else gets us sidetracked. We become too busy to draw closer to Christ in His Word or in
prayer, because we chase a relationship, a hobby, or a job that has become our new
god. The worst part is that sometimes we don’t even know it when it
happens. If there’s any doubt
whether you are on the right road, seek Christ to turn around.
Don’t
look for shortcuts to God. The market is flooded with surefire, easygoing
formulas for a successful life that can be practiced in your spare time. Don’t
fall for that stuff, even though crowds of people do. The way to life—to
God!—is vigorous and requires total attention (Matthew 7:13-14, MSG).
