“The great defense against the air
menace is to attack the enemy's aircraft as near as possible to their point of
departure.” -Winston
Churchill
Whether we realize it or not, we never stop fighting
spiritual warfare. We already know
to defend ourselves against the enemy’s attacks in the bad times of the valley,
perhaps by seeking God in prayer and connecting with other Christians. However, we also need to be on guard in
the mountain top moments where all is going good. The enemy comes to kill courage, steal joy and destroy dignity.
Maybe you get a pay raise but fail
to be generous, or get attention from the wrong girl, or at the Christmas party you get a
little looser with your tongue. The best defense is a strong offense: “I’m not
going to be greedy”—or, “I don’t trust myself with her”—or, “life and death lie
in the power of the tongue.” In
this time like any we must put on the whole armor of God.
Stand
firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness
in place, and with your feet fitted with the
readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with
which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is
the word of God (Ephesians 6:14-16, NIV).
